The John B. Tenney Memorial Art Scholarship

From it's inception, the CBAA began the tradition of offering a scholarship to a local high school graduate to aide in furtherance of their art studies. Charter Member John B. Tenney began fund-raising efforts by donating one of his paintings for auction. Due to Mr. Tenney's efforts and support, the tradition of raising funds for the scholarship grew and expanded to become part of all CBAA shows.   Upon his death in 1989, the members of the CBAA renamed the scholarship fund, the "John B. Tenney Memorial" Scholarship Fund in his honor.  The Scholarship is awarded each year at CBAA’s Spring Show, which is a members only Art Show.

Mr. Tenney was born in Raleigh, N.C. and for more than 30 yrs. resided in Willoughby Spit, Norfolk, Va. He was married to the late Francis Tenney, also a local artist and art teacher for the Portsmouth Public Schools. He was a member of the Virginia Beach, Tidewater, and Chesapeake Bay Art Associations. He won over 100 awards in Local and Regional shows and his work may still be found in many East Coast Galleries. We are thankful for his work in getting the scholarship program off the ground and his many gracious contributions of prints donated to raise funds.
